How the prices work
Viking Line and Tallink Silja sell the Stockholm - Helsinki crossing at dynamic prices: the travel date, direction, cabin, vehicle and time of booking determine the amount, and you see the current price when you book. Because the ferry sails overnight, the cabin is the biggest item. With Viking Line you pay per cabin, not per person, which makes the crossing much cheaper per head for three or four people.

The gap between the cheapest departure and a peak-season one is noticeable: in summer, the cheapest car departures in the booking comparison were higher, by around a third with Tallink Silja.
Cabin: what drives the price
The cheapest cabins are inside or below the car deck, without a window. The higher the deck, the better the sea view and the larger the cabin, the more the night costs; with Viking Line, breakfast is included with suites and premium cabins. With Viking Line, one child up to 11 years old can also travel in the cabin without their own bed. The Cabins page explains both ferry companies' categories.
Vehicles: what drives the price
With both ferry companies, the overall length and height of the vehicle count, including roof boxes, kayaks and bike racks on the roof. Viking Line grades prices by length and by height above or below 2.40 metres; a motorhome over 2.40 metres high falls into its own price band. Changes and cancellations
With Viking Line, you can change the travel date free of charge up to 24 hours before departure, to a trip within twelve months. How much you get back if you cancel depends on how early you cancel; instead of a refund you can choose a credit valid for twelve months.
With Tallink Silja, changes are free up to 21 days before departure, and no changes are possible less than 24 hours before. With the FleksiBron option, which you add for all travellers when booking, you get the full price back up to 4 hours before departure; it doesn't apply to packages.

How to save on this route
- Share a cabin. With Viking Line you pay per cabin; with four people the night is cheapest per head.
- Inside instead of sea view. You sleep for most of the crossing, and an inside cabin is enough for that.
- Travel outside the holidays. Midweek and outside the summer, starting prices are lower.
- Compare both ferry companies. Both leave in the late afternoon, and their prices aren't always the same.
- Check the mini cruise. If you want to come back after a day anyway, compare the two-night package with two one-way trips.

Which ferry company is cheaper? +
That varies with the date, cabin and vehicle. On the cheapest car departures, Viking Line was recently ahead; on other days it may be Tallink Silja. Compare both for your date in the booking above.
Why is the price per cabin? +
Viking Line only sells whole cabins; you can't book single berths. The starting price is per cabin for one to four adults, so sharing the cabin lowers the cost per person. The Cabins page explains which cabin suits you.
