Why the cabin is part of the trip

The Stockholm - Helsinki ferry sails overnight: departure in the afternoon, arrival the next morning. The cabin is where you spend the crossing. With Viking Line you always book a whole cabin; single berths aren't sold. With Tallink Silja, the cabin is yours for the whole trip. Both ferry companies have similar tiers: economy deep in the ship, standard inside and outside cabins, then premium or Commodore cabins and suites above that.

Viking Line: Gabriella

The Gabriella has 20 cabin categories. The smallest is the Inside Piccolo at 7 square metres. The Economy measures 8.4 square metres and is on deck 2, below the car deck. The standard cabins, inside and with a sea view, measure 8.5 square metres, some with a TV. Above those come the Inside Premium at 15 and the Seaside Premium at 11.5 square metres, the Seaside Premium Large at 20 and the Seaside Premium with balcony at 22 to 25 square metres. The Junior Suite with balcony measures 27, the Suite 28.5 to 33.5 square metres. For families there are the Inside Comfort Family and the Ville Viking cabin.

With suites and premium cabins, breakfast is included on overnight crossings.

Viking Line: Viking Cinderella

On the Viking Cinderella the cabins are a little larger. The Economy measures 8.4 square metres and the Economy Piccolo 7.9, both on deck 2. The standard inside cabins measure 8.4 and those with a sea view 9 square metres, as do the Comfort cabins inside and outside. The Seaside Premium Promenade measures 12.9 and the Seaside Premium Large 25 to 30 square metres. At 43 to 55 square metres, the Suite is the largest Viking Line cabin on this route.

Tallink Silja: Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony

On the Silja Serenade and the Silja Symphony, the choice starts low down in the ship. The C-Economy is on deck 2 and measures 9 to 11 square metres; Tallink Silja points out that it can be noisy. The B-Standard inside and the A-Standard with a sea view measure 11 square metres; the A-Standard is available on deck 5 and on decks 8 to 11 for up to five people. The Silja Symphony also has the Standard Promenade, likewise 11 square metres.

For families there is the Family cabin at 14 square metres for up to six people; at least one child must then be in the booking. The Deluxe on deck 11 measures 14 square metres. The Commodore has 20 to 25 square metres on decks 10 and 11, some with a balcony in Marimekko design. The Suite measures 42 to 49 square metres on deck 9, the Executive Suite 75 square metres on deck 11 for up to six people. There are also Moomin standard cabins on deck 9.

Premium guests check in from 15:00 and use the Commodore Lounge. Wi-Fi is available in the Deluxe and suites and in the public areas. With Tallink Silja you can't choose the exact location of your cabin. There's more about the ships on the Tallink Silja page.

Allergies and dogs

Both ferry companies have cabins for allergy sufferers. On the Gabriella, Viking Line offers the Seaside Standard as an allergy-friendly cabin, and on the Viking Cinderella there are allergy-friendly inside and outside cabins. Animals are not allowed in them. With Tallink Silja, some Commodore cabins are allergy-friendly.

With Viking Line your dog stays in the cabin overnight, just not in an allergy-friendly one. Tallink Silja only takes animals in pet-friendly cabins in categories A, B and C. The rules are on the Dogs & pets page.

Accessible cabins

Viking Line has accessible cabins for one to three people on deck 5 on both ships, measuring 14.5 square metres on the Gabriella and 17.8 on the Viking Cinderella. You book them online, subject to availability. With Tallink Silja the accessible cabin measures 14 square metres and is on deck 8, with an 89-centimetre-wide door, a bed height of 50 to 53 centimetres, an emergency call button and a shower seat. The Silja Symphony also has an accessible Commodore cabin with a sea view on deck 11.

With both ferry companies, request help with boarding and disembarking at least 48 hours before departure. Wheelchair users are better off boarding through the terminal than via the car deck. With Viking Line, be at the meeting point in the terminal at least one hour before departure.

Cabin rules

Smoking is not allowed in Viking Line cabins. One child up to eleven years old can travel in addition without their own bed, and there is a baby cot for infants up to 10 kilograms. With Tallink Silja, you vacate the cabin straight away on the last morning.

Which cabin for whom

If you want to save money and only sleep, take the economy on deck 2 and accept that it may be noisy. For four people a standard cabin is usually enough, and families will find family cabins with both ferry companies. Couples who see the night as part of the holiday book a sea view or premium cabin; on the Gabriella, breakfast is included with suites and premium cabins.
